Are There Any First Term Ex Military People Out There That Can Answer This Question Please?

By admin Posted in: Uncategorized

Hi, after this semester, I will be transferring to a four year university. As most of you SHOULD know, its a little weird to be the “old man” at 28 and transferring to a four year university. Also, before I go any further with this question, I should point out that I am INELIGIBLE at this point to re-enter the military because I am permanently disqualified at this point from ever re-entering the military because I have to take medication for stress, anxiety, and depression and will most likely have to take this medication for the rest of my life. With that said, how should I go about trying to find a roommate on campus since I am so “old” and will be living amongst folks that are almost ten years younger than I am. I have tried applying to several companies and no one will hire me because I don’t have at least a four year degree and I will only have an A.S. degree after this semester is over. I realize that a LARGE majority of “student veterans” are married and live with their spouses so I really am in a VERY slim minority in terms of the student population. So, how in the h*ll should I go about trying to find a roommate since I am in such an awkward position due to my age and due to the fact that I used to be in “the suck” a.k.a. the USMC? Can you image being a 25 year old and having to return to high school? Well, that’s about how I feel right now being “old” at 28 and trying to be able to SUPPOSEDLY transition to an institution in which I will never be socially accepted due to my age and background. Moreover, I should note that I have been living with my sis and her husband so that I would have a place to stay while I attend my local community college and am about to have to possibly move out of state to attend a four year school. Also, with all due respect, please don’t try to tell me that I should NOT worry about trying to fit in and make friends while I am at the university. I would almost be willing to bet my life that if you MARRIED student veterans out there were SINGLE like myself and didn’t have your wives then you’d be singing the same tune that I am right now. Thanks!

Well, I’m not an ex from the army, just to let you know first of all.
I really don’t think you would have a problem fitting in, your not that old. I have seen why older go to college and be fine. Unless you look a lot older or something, most people would be impressed if you told them the reason your 28 is because you served in the marines. As for roomates, I don’t know, sorry.

You do realize that you can buy alcohol right? Think about it.

actually i think you’ll be surprised how easy you will fit in. i was 25 when i went to college and felt the same way as you. but there are more people than you think will be your age going to school. i made some good friends while there that i still keep in touch with. having been through the whole “party” thing when i was younger, college was actually i lot easier than i thought it would be having been out of high school for so long. just give it a shot. i think you’ll find it isn’t as awkward as you think it is going to be.

Your too worried. Try finding another vet, or somebody around your age. There has to be somebody out there your age. Try to make a few friends and see which one is cool, and which one youd like to share a place with.

Ask the university about a dormitory Resident Advisor position. Different institutions have different names for the RA program but essentially it is a leadership position as “Dorm Daddy” over the younger students. I started college in 1975 and many Vietnam era veterans were in the student population. The college loved to use the older and more mature Viet vets as R/As since their experience with leadership and supervision over immature 18 year olds made sense. Every one of the 4 RA’s in my college years was an unmarried veteran that appeared to be over 25. They had private suites in the center of the dorms. It also qualified as a form of “work-study” and they received a hefty discount on student residence fees. Oh, and they got laid a lot…a lot.
