My neighbor’s are crappy people who I desperately wish would move far, far away. They brought home a cat a year ago, and seemingly lost interest in it almost immediately. I found the thing half-starved and covered with fleas back in late Spring. I took a couple photos of the condition I found the animal in before giving her a bath, and feeding her. I made a couple attempts at contacting my neighbors to see if I could buy the cat from them, but they never called me back. Finally I simply took the cat to the vet to get it its shots and to be neutered. At the time I just told the vet she was my cat.
Now, after I’ve had the cat all this time, my neighbors suddenly have an interest in getting it back. They claim their children love the cat, and that I have no right to keep it from them. I’ve flat out told them to call the police on me because I refuse to hand it over.
I’d definitely prefer to keep the cat. She’s close to me, and I want to see her remain in good health. But if they actually do call the police I don’t know what I can do. Obviously I have proof of the condition I found the animal in. I also have vet records to show that I’ve been caring for the animal for nearly a year now. If needed I could also get neighbors to attest to how terribly they’d treated the animal.
Unfortunately I imagine instead of arguing with me they’ll just go get another pet to torture, but if they do bring the law into it what sort of chance do I have? If it’s simply a matter of affording a better attorney then I’d take them hands down.

Tell them if they want the cat back they will have to reimburse you for the care that you have provided for her over the last year. Sit down and write up an itemized list of everything you have provided for her like food, vet care, shampoo, toys, litter box, litter etc.. Present them with the list, I guarantee they will back down once they see the total of her care.
You don’t say what state you live in, it’s possible that because you have had the cat for so long now they have no legal claim to her.
It’s their cat.
You didn’t call animal Control to pick it up.
You have to give it back. I’m a pet lover too and I hate to see pets abused too.
If it starts hanging around your house again , take it to Animal Control and tell them you will adopt it when the waiting period is up.
Thanks for caring for the cat.
It is their cat.Call the Police on them if they keep up the abuse.
What a terrible situation. It’s great that you took the cat in, they obviously didn’t care for it at all. I don’t know if this will help, but there is a law that states that animals are property, and therefore not acknowledged as a life. I am a dog groomer and unfortunately have seen plenty of people bring their neglected animals in, and sadly enough there is nothing I can do. The company I work for won’t allow it because they can be sued if I took any action against my clients. Even simply calling animal control can get me fired. I live in Colorado and I’m unsure if this is nation wide or what. But if it is, I would think that the abandoned property law may apply. It’s been a year, that’s a long time to completely ignore something you care about. Call the animal control agency in your area and see if maybe this applies. I hope this helped, and let me just make clear, I have no clue if it will. But good for you fighting them on this, and I wish you all the luck in the world.
it depends on which state you live in….if you still have the photos of the cat in it’s worst state then show them to the people and tell them to go ahead and call the police because, here in texas, an abandoned animal is up for grabs and since you took it the vet and had it license UNDER you….you are the legal owner because if your vet is good she/he would have done a micro-chip check and if there was none then the cat is yours…..just because you didn’t call animal control doesn’t make the cat their you have something they don’t and that is medical records……keep you cat in doors and if those idiot neighbors take it report it STOLEN ASAP you have records that it yours
Most court cases are simply a matter of affording a better attorney, but do you really want to spend that much money and have extremely angry and bitter neighbors?
If they do call the police and try to reclaim the animal, they will need some sort of documentation proving that the animal is theirs. If they can come up with that, then they will get their animal back unless you can prove animal abuse. If you can prove that the animal was abused, then they will be fined and the animal will be taken to the pound, where you could choose to adopt her. I advise you contact the ASPCA or a group in your area that deals with animal cruelty and tell them your situation. I’m sure they have heard your story many times and can guide you on exactly what actions to take.
