My 1998 Geo Metro Is Having Problems!?

By admin Posted in: panic

Hello! I own a 98 Metro, and lately I’ve been freaking myself out about it!! When I first bought it almost a year ago, I didn’t realize that it had a pretty bad oil leak on it; got everywhere! But once I got that fixed, the car has been squeaking like crazy!! It usually squeaks when it’s cold, when I stop, when I go, when I start it! ERR!! Now it feels like it just wants to drop dead after leaving a stop light!!
I’ve got two boys, and I really don’t want to get into panic mode with this car!! But I do really love it!! Not sure if the best thing for me and my car is just to junk it or save it!! Any ideas will help!! Thank-You!

The Geo line of auto’s have a lot of problems, oil leaks among them. As for the squealing that sounds like a serpentine belt with oil on it. The other stalling problem may be injector crud. I would put a can of Seafoam or the like in the gas tank just before adding five to seven gallons of fuel. Run the car and see if the problem clears up. If not you may need the injectors professionally cleaned. while your out and about take it to a auto parts store and have the computer trouble codes read. This is usually free.

the squeaking is the belts are loose. you can tighten up those or replace them, to take care of the noise. tightening the alternator and power steering pump bracket would tighten the belts down.
With the hesitation, it could be several things. when was the last time you check the transmission fluid? this would cause some hesitation. A little more information about what it is doing exactly, when its hesitating (dropping dead) that would help. The only other thing would be the catalytic converter needing to be changed, based on the information you provided. More information would help.

Here are 3 easy things you should try first:
buy a can of belt dressing and spray on the belts
you can buy those anywhere & should be around $3
buy a bottle of fuel injector cleaner($3) and dump add to the gas tank when you fill up
chk air filter – replace if necessary (can’t be anymore than $15 i think)
    Harder things to do:
clean out the battery terminals & cable ends – you will need some basic tools and a steel brush
take the spark plugs out and chk – replace if necessary
chk ignition wires – read ohm from end to end & chk with specs – replace if necessary
    & also chk all fulids
