Question About Panic Attacks….?

By admin Posted in: panic

I have suffered from panic attacks for years, for years I took Xanax to control my episodes….I have not used Xanax for over 3 years and do not want to get back on them. Occasionally i will have a terrible panic attack that scares me so bad…what could i do, other than taking medicine …to help me get through a bad attack?

Exercise helps me. Walking, swimming. Listening to relaxation tapes, soft music. Not
watching t.v. in my room, drinking warm milk before bedtime. I have done this instead of depending
    on taking too much Xanax.

You are wise to not take drugs – too many people think drugs are the answer, when in reality they help nothing and make things worse in the long run.
I found a couple of really good books at the library that taught me about anxiety and panic attacks and how to control them. Go to your local library (yes, the library!) and you will find some very good books on anxiety and panic attacks. They will teach you what causes it, and most importantly how to deal with it, live with it, overcome it, and without drugsl. I’ve visited with counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and all of them know some, but I found a couple of books from the library to be more comprehensive and have more information than any one therapist or doctor that I’ve ever visited. A lot of anxiety disorders and panic attacks can be overcome without drugs if you know how to do it.
In particular, you can learn how to handle panic attacks, and turn them into 90 second episodes that fade as quickly as they come.

I had/have those too. Best thing I did was cut out stimulants-as basically your CNS is already hyper and it needs to be given the flood control treatment (1st cut off the new stuff from flowing then mop up). (caffeine is the easiest to ditch -drop coffee and all soda). Also cut out sugary stuff in my diet and replaced using sugar with stevia. That takes months though for a good noticable drop so I used Ativan once daily for about 5 months while I changed lifestyle. I know some things can be hard to give up but you gotta ask yourself -are they worth it feeling like your heart is going to pop and genuinely considering eating a bullet to end the misery? Idk about you but my chest would hurt so bad it was an attractive option rather than enduring. Scary how they just appear with no real trigger.
Nicotine is the hardest to cut out and a big player in these if your a smoker – I’d stay on the meds until you quit smoking as they are helpful in countering the withdrawals.
Exercise is the next step once your diet is in order. I’d start slow with long walks rather than HIIT cardio and such as your still not prime and even though your heart may be great you may interpret it as being bad thus feeding the frenzy (which you know once they happen the worse thing you can do is feed them -best to sit calmly – BREATHE and suffer them out opposed to checking your heart)
1- ditch stims – use meds esp for addictions
    2-diet and nutrition
3- begin slow and measured exercise
Also in general if you feel them coming on (I’m more nocturnal on getting them) its best to be up doing something or at least sitting upright watching a movie rather than laying down. When you lay down it seems you feel these things more.
    Good luck
