Atheism isn’t supposed to be a religion, more like a lack of one. So why does it seem like 75% of all answers to peoples’ serious questions in the Religion section are just gibes about how their beliefs make them stupid?
I’m all for not passing judgment on people due to their labels but come on guys, you’re making it hard for me to think of atheists in a positive light. Cut it out. Let the other people be, you won’t draw anyone away from their beliefs by making them resent the people who hold YOUR beliefs.

You don’t take atheists in a positive light because your own biases prevent you from understanding our arguments.
The default position is atheist: to not believe in God until somebody demonstrates that there really is one or more of them.
It’s really quite simple: those who claim there is a God have a burden of proof, and they offer “faith” instead, which means they believe what they have decided to believe and damn the evidence or lack thereof.
As for why we post here, there are various reasons. I do it because I want to help those who are still under the mental slavery of religion find their way to freedom.

You realize this is a public forum? Our disagreement with you on topics and debunking of your arguments does not automatically constitute “passing judgment” due to “labels”. We may certainly think you are wrong and say so without being insulting. Sadly, many of you theists do not seem to understand that distinction.
If you don’t want people with dissenting ideas commenting on your posts, don’t post in a forum where anyone with an internet connection can read and respond. That simple. Or, as my mother put it, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”.
I still say a church steeple with a lightning rod on top shows a lack of confidence.

i’ve asked the same question and you know what answers i got? more insults to avoid answering the question! i got long winded answers about everything except why atheists do nothing but insult people in this section and why so many are in this section when they believe religion and spirituality is false.
1) Atheists can’t really lose an argument. You believe in a Deity yet there is no evidence to suggest it exists. We can’t disprove God, just like we can’t disprove unicorns. However believing in something with out evidence is irrational.
2) Some think they can change people. It’s true that people can only become Atheists if their faith is challenged, yet some Atheists may take it too far.

Attempting to make someone feel small also creates a sense of insecurity in the victim…when in reality it is the bully who’s most insecure, lost and like a 2 y.o. crying for attention…
It seems to me the atheists want, no demand, to be heard and many are simply unable to listen so escape-ism into this sodo-reality (yahoo R&S) is therapy for their frustrations.
As to the atheist criticism of Christianity and christians; most ( I know i do) see it as adolescent and impotent.

edit: This may surprise you but as a Christian who frequents this site, I have come to appreciate the question and answers given by atheists. Many of them are very well versed in biblical beliefs and will challenge you and force you to re-examine your own beliefs. In the end you will become a stronger Christian because of their contributions.
You have to understand the other side. I’m not Atheist, but Agnostic. We hear a TON of comments that don’t make a whole lot of sense to us, and some Atheists may see this as their chance to do the criticizing and actually be able to get a word in edgewise.
Most of the time if an Atheist or Agnostic tries to say what they do or don’t believe, they are immediately told how they are wrong and how whatever god/deity the other person worships is the only right choice.
I can’t tell you how many times I have had “good Christians” go on basically a rant about how I must be a bad person or how could I live my life without believing in God or trying to convert me right there on the spot. Seriously, I once had a woman who asked me about what church I went to and acted completely shocked & taken aback that I am Agnostic; she said, “but you’re so NICE! You had to have gone to church when you were little!” Like being nice automatically equates to Christian.
Sometimes, it’s nice to be able to voice your opinion and actually be able to get out a full sentence before being yelled at/treated like crap.
Because they have nothing better to do.
